Welcome back #VibrantFam! I am back from a small hiatus of creative replenishment to bring an artist highlight of someone I am happy to call a friend. One of my favorite parts of this wild industry is the people you meet and learning about what creative endeavors they embark on themselves.
I met Frankie Silver when I started working at the Brooklyn Mirage/Avant-Gardner and learned about his music career. He is one the most bubbly, friendly people I have come to know within the venue and industry. We talked about a few topics ranging from inspirations in the industry, overcoming obstacles and what exciting new projects he has coming. Take a gander and then check out his music at the end of the interview.
How did you get your start in music?
I started singing professionally when I was six, when I auditioned for the Philadelphia Boys Choir. Ever since, I’ve had an affinity for the performing arts. As I continued to work in the entertainment industry (through dance, piano and singing), my network began to expand. It wasn’t until I suffered a life chaining injury, that I decided to ‘go all in’ and focus on becoming my own artist. I was very fortunate to have a strong support system and I was able to utilize my connects with the people in the trade who believed in my potential.
What has been the biggest obstacle in the industry that you've had to overcome?
As most people know, this is not an easy industry to break into. I am taking a slightly different approach to the biz, by creating unique and creative ways to my get name out there and gain exposure through live performance.
Who are your inspirations within the music industry?
I have always been inspired Britney Spears. Watching her on MTV when I was growing up, inspired me to start dancing. I always admired her charisma, and the way she seemed so fearless in front of a crowd.
However, lately I’ve been evolving my range and working on music that is a little outside my box. I recently recorded a cover of Charlie Puth’s ‘Attention’, that has opened some doors to new recording opportunities that I am very excited to explore.
If you could have dinner with one musician or prominent figure, who would it be and why?
Maybe the is cliche to say, but I would love to have dinner with John Lennon or Paul McCartney. I feel that [they] were lyrically advanced for their time. It would be really interesting to sit down with them and pick their brains on how they developed such monumental songs, that still to this day are influencing and impacting the world.
Inspired by the podcast "Not Too Deep" if you could throw cold spaghetti at one person, dead or alive, who would it be?
Whoever invented plastic straws. They’re so wasteful and I’m a big fan of sea turtles.
What's coming up for you on the creative journey? New music? Music video(s)?
My good friend Taylor Momsen from the rock group, ‘The Pretty Reckless”, has given me one of her songs that I am proud to announce I will be covering. The song is allowing me to expand my range. Seeing as she is a Rock n Roll artist, consulting with her on how to record and use my voice in a different way than I am used to has given me a lot of “a-ha!” moments.
Lastly, what is something you'd like fans and newcomers to know about you?
As I mentioned before, I grew up dancing and performing on stage. A few years back, I suffered a massive freak accident, in which my arteries and tendons were completely severed in my right wrist. I was told dancing, piano and gymnastics (all the things I love), would no longer be a possibility. Had it not been for the lengthy recovery process, which spanned over the course of 3 years, I probably would not have began to write my own music. So, I guess the questions is not what I want I want people to know about me, but what I’d want anyone to take from that story is, no matter what life obstacles come your way, the power lies inside of you to grow form it, and change it.
Check out his newest EP 'Coming Alive' right below and get ready to have a dance party wherever you are. Thank you to Frankie Silver for taking the time to talk with me and super stoked to hear the rock cover coming soon!
